South West Lightning Photo Gallery

This was one of those rare nights when taking a lightning photo was almost easy, courtesy of a very active lightning storm near Margaret River. It was no doubt the longest, and probably most productive chase I've been on so far. I chased storms that night with Mike Fewings and Nick Djordjevic. We left Perth at about four in the afternoon and drove down to Yalgorup National Park south of Mandurah only to find that storms had moved south much quicker than we anticipated. We were just about ready to head back to Perth when we noticed new storms developing around Bunbury. It wasn't a hard decision to continue chasing and we eventually caught up with the storms just north of Margaret River. I took each lightning photo below standing in a farm paddock as the storm raged only a few kilometres ahead of us. Later on we drove to the coast and photographed another storm at Red Gate beach.
